Where Your Money Goes...
For four years Hearts of Stone has supported Hospicio de Huérfanos de San
Jose (a Costa Rican orphanage established in 1886) through the Pura Vida No Pro
Surfing Contest (PVNP). In Costa Rica, current conditions mandate that at the
age of 18 the government consider these children to be autonomous and capable of
living on their own and they are no longer able to remain in the orphanage. They
must leave the only secure home many of them have ever known. However, the
reality is that portions of these teenagers are still children because they have
not matured enough to survive on their own. Their fate is to be swallowed up by
pornography, prostitution, drug abuse or worse yet, to completely disappear.
Many times, at best, they are plagued to repeat the cycle of abandonment.
Recognizing the opportunity to do something for the children, Hearts of Stone,
together with the staff and director of Hospicio de Huérfanos implemented a
comprehensive plan. This plan included a new method for the young people to
prepare themselves for independence by creating a transitional facility, called
Casa de Sueños (House of Dreams) that will provide critical assistance,
oversight, and safety through empowerment, not entitlement.
The Contest...
Residents of the Hospicio, located in the capital city of San Jose, will
be whisked to the beach for a day of fun, encouragement and surfing. Surfers and
volunteers will share a sport they love and a part of themselves as we
contribute to a wonderful group of children. Think of it as "Surfing in a
New Light." http://www.ruhooked.com/artman/article_877.shtml
Day One - Pura Vida "Grommet Day" (little surfers))
Grommet Day, located at the Auberge du Pelican on Playa Esterillos,
is a surfing clinic, and has been designed to
expose the children to the art and beauty of surfing, in a fun-filled, positive
environment. The event will focus on providing a forum for these children to see
a new future and provide inspiration to succeed and share the good things in
life. The grommets will learn to surf, play games and create relationships while
spending the day with surfing enthusiast and volunteers. All the children will
be awarded prizes and receive a beach bag full of clothes and other goodies.
The Pura Vida No Pro Pro/AM and Open(Adults)
The Pro/Am portion of the competition, to be held a Playa Hermosa, will
be a blind draw that will divide the participants into teams which will compete
for prizes donated by our sponsors. Each team will consist of surfers with
varying experience levels; pros, experts, intermediates & novice. The
particular format will be announced at the event and the rules will be explained
by the tournament director. The PVNP Open is an individual competition for cash
prizes utilizing typical best wave scoring. Join the fun and surf with a pro!
ENTRY FEE is $100.00 PLUS participation in the grommet day activities.
Participation eligibility will be confirmed at the Auberge du Pelican resort at
the conclusion of the grommet day activities.
