Pura Vida No Pro:
Since 2002, Hearts of Stone has supported Hospicio de Huérfanos de San Jose (a Costa Rican orphanage established in 1886) through the Pura Vida No Pro Surfing Contest (PVNP), held annually the Saturday before Thanksgiving.
Residents of the Hospicio and Casa de Sueños, both located in the capital city of San Jose, are whisked to the beach for a day of fun, encouragement and surfing.
Held annually the Saturday before Thanksgiving, the day begins with breakfast for the kids at the Auberge du Pelican on Playa Esterillos. Breakfast is followed by a surfing clinic that has been designed to expose the children to the art and beauty of surfing, in a fun-filled, positive environment. The event focuses on providing a forum for these children to see a new future and provide inspiration to succeed and share the good things in life. The orphans learn to surf, play games and create relationships while spending the day with surfing professionals, enthusiasts and volunteers.
A Pro/Am portion of the competition follows lunch, provided by Auberge du Pelican, and the morning with the children. Participants are divided into teams; each team consists of surfers with varying experience levels; pros, experts, intermediates & novice who compete for prizes donated by our sponsors.
The Residents of the Hospicio and Casa de Sueños return by bus to San Jose. Surfers and volunteers share a sport they love and a part of themselves as they contribute to a wonderful group of children.
